June 1, 1899, my husband was finishing a contract to furnish wood for an excelsior factory, when his axe touched an over-hanging bough and he sent the large blade through his foot, taking off two toes and about one third of the foot, excepting a small piece of skin on one side and another small place on the bottom. He was five miles from home; our son H., aged thirteen, was his companion.

A storm during the night had raised the river, leaving their boat out in the stream. H. gave up once, while trying to reach it, and went back crying. His father told him he must get the boat. He saw his father must have help; with an extra effort he succeeded, took his father across, and ran to a farmhouse for the much-needed help. Mr. J. traveled at least a mile through the woods and along the banks of the river.

Those to whom H. went for help insisted on getting a doctor, but Mr. J. would not allow them to call one, so they kindly brought him home.
