Christian Science was brought to me nearly two years...
Christian Science was brought to me nearly two years ago through the priceless book, Science and Health. It was a gift from a loving friend, who knew and realized my sore need of divine help. At first I was unwilling to touch the book even. I felt it was an insult to me. Being a graduate of St. Luke's Training School, of Chicago, Illinois, and having practised medicine for sixteen years, the question came, what could I gain by reading that little book after all my diligent study in those many and important medical works? But at length the desire came to know what was within its covers. I had been sick for five years. Doctors in Europe, as well as doctors here, were unable to help me, and with my own knowledge of materia medica I did not see how I could be cured. In the first place, I had a chronic bowel trouble and other serious troubles which had to be operated upon about every four or five years since I was six years old.
In 1896, while in Europe, I contracted the Roman fever with the added belief of nervous prostration, which caused double-sightedness so that I was unable for two years to sew, read, or write. We all wish for health, we all long for happiness, and many "hunger and thirst after righteousness." All indeed, wish in a way, to be better than they are. And with these desires I began to read Science and Health.
At the close of the fifth day I was pleased to reckon the pages I had read, and they numbered eighteen. I raised my hands to remove my glasses, when I found that I did not have them on, and I then remembered that some hours before I had taken them off, because they hurt me across the nose. I knew just where I had placed them, I went for them, opened the window, and threw them out. Now I see with the enlightened eyes of the soul "the riches of the glory of our inheritance," and I can also see to sew, read, and write. As there can be no strong faith without strong desire, I returned to my reading, feeling if this had been done to my eyes, greater things could be accomplished; I knew that God would not stop at one member, but would heal the whole, I knew He would not have one branch of the "vine" imperfect. Ten days later, I awoke one morning to find my prayer realized.
