Spirit vs. Matter

Coos County (N. H. ) Democrat.

In a material age the word Spirit, or spiritual, fills many minds with a sense of mystery and aversion, the word finds no place in the nomenclature of the chemical laboratories, and is not therefore supposed to represent anything that has any actual, substantial existence.

In Christian Science the word Spirit is synonymous with God, Substance, Mind. It is the real and immortal, of which the material is but a misconception, a finite, imperfect, limited view.

Spirit, as God, has no material counterpart, the material and the spiritual cannot co-exist, "The flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh: and these are contrary the one to the other." Man is not material, nor is he a miniature spirit, developed out of the infinite Spirit; man reflects Spirit; he is the image, the likeness of God.
