Among the Churches

Sunday, August 5, 1900, is a day that will ever be remembered in the history of First Church of Christ, Scientist, of Berlin, Ont., as on that day the doors of the beautiful new edifice, on the corner of Water and Francis Streets, were opened to the public for the purpose of consecrating this church home to the worship of the living God.

The opening ceremonies held on Sunday were most interesting, and notwithstanding the sweltering heat, the auditorium and gallery were crowded at each of the three services. The nominal seating accommodation is four hundred, but over five hundred persons attended on each occasion. Had the general public known what renowned vocalists had been secured, the building would not have been able to hold even a small proportion of those who would have sought admittance. In the forenoon Mr. Edw. P. Johnston, a rising young Canadian tenor, now of New York, sang, and in the afternoon and evening, Mr. Ernest Sharpe of London, England, a world-noted baritone, assisted in the service.

Among those who attended were included a large number of visitors and representatives from the various Scientist churches in the different cities of Ontario and the United States, and even from London, England. Some of the cities represented were Boston, Mass., the home of the Mother Church; Cambridge of the same state; Cleveland, Ohio; Buffalo, Brooklyn, Rochester, and Troy, N. Y.; Toronto, Ottawa, Hamilton, Brantford. Guelph, Kingston, St. Thomas, etc. The total number of those from a distance was about two hundred.
