Rev. Julian K. Smyth, in the New Church Messenger says: "Not to cry 'Peace. Peace!' where there is no peace; not out of mere weakness or good nature pretend that all is well when there is so much that is ill; not in weak sentimentality to declare that God is so good that He will just pet men with soft hands into heavenly states of life—that was not the mission of the Son of Man, but rather to awaken in men a consciousness that with his help it is possible for them to take the sword of the spirit and overcome the evils that would hold them in slavery, and enter deeply and harmoniously into the varied powers and faculties of their natures."
Among the editorial brevities in the (Unitarian) Christian Register appears the following: "In the Preacher's Magazine we find the question, 'Is there, then, any punishment left for us to bear?' The answer given is: 'No. He [that is, Jesus] has borne all.' Can any statement be more opposed to the facts of experience? What repentant sinner ever finds himself released from the penalties of his wrong-doing in this life? If the penalties are not removed in this life, what reason is there to suppose that in any life they will be removed until they have done the work for which they were appointed?"
The Universalist Leader says that one of its subscribers has proposed to deposit with the Universalist Publishing Society the sum of $50 as a subscription endowment fund, the income of which will pay for the paper to be sent to her during her present life, and thereafter to go on while time and the publication last, as a missionary subscription. The publishers urge that two thousand loyal Universalists pay twenty-five years subscription in advance at two dollars per year on the same plan, and thus give the Leader a subscription endowment of $100,000.
