Among the Churches

St. Louis Daily Globe-Democrat

First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Camden, Maine, was chartered December 23, 1899, with a membership of sixteen.

Since June 25, 1899, Christian Science services have been held in Camden, in the Universalist Church edifice, a Christian Science Society having been organized November 6, 1896. This society, at the time of its organization, consisted of three students' students, two other earnest seekers after Truth, and a brave and loyal pioneer of Christian Science from a neighboring city as First Reader.

Services were held at first at the several homes of the Scientists, but divine Love soon led the way to a higher demonstration, and a small room, centrally located in the town, was secured. Loving hearts and willing hands uniting in the joy of working for the Master soon made ready this room for occupancy, cosily furnishing it with chairs, desks, pictures, mottoes, light, heat, and an organ. For some time it seemed wise to hold our meetings on a week night only, so once a week the regular Sunday lesson from the Quarterly was read, and a testimonial service held after this reading.
