The Difference
The difference between the ignorance of Christian Science and the understanding of it, is like the difference between groping timidly along a dark road, with the purpose and the end of the journey utterly unknown, and that of walking fearlessly along an illuminated pathway, conscious of a glorious purpose and an end which, if still unknown, can bring nothing but Love.
"Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures" comes to us like the rousing and ringing message of Paul to the Athenians, when he found an altar "to the unknown God," "whom therefore ye ignorantly worship, him declare I unto you." No longer are we building upon the shifting sand of mortal speculation, but upon the immovable rock of Truth, against which the waves of error beat in vain. We know, even while we seem to be under a cloud, that it is only a negative condition we are facing, not a positive. At night, we are conscious of darkness, but in the morning, where is it? Nowhere. It never was a reality, only the absence of light. Evil is utterly negative—an absence, to our sense, of Good, and its seeming power flees before the declaration of the positive Good, as the darkness before the sun.
How can we do aught but rejoice when living in harmony with Christian Science? How can we be less than happy in this absolute freedom and security?
