The Phoenix

Chattanooga Times

From the land of ancient Egypt,
On the banks of storied Nile,
Comes a lesson, old and musty,
To keep our hearts from guile.
A lesson fraught with wisdom
And love for you and me;
For all who, having ears do hear,
And having eyes, do see.

It was fabled in that country
(In the town of Pe Ra On),
That a bird of brilliant plumage,
Most fair to look upon,
Came flying to the city
Once each five hundred years,
Was welcomed by the people
With prayers and joyful tears.

And when the service ended
And all the rites were said,
It gathered up sweet spices
And leaves about his head.
Then suddenly above his form
Would start a blazing fire,
Which burned, till it at last became
His chosen funeral pyre.
