False Rumor
The Independent says: "There is a split in the Christian Science body." A new body has been formed and already over twenty churches have been organized. It is alleged that there are ten thousand Eddy followers who have left the first church and the number is increasing every day.
The above, copied from the Independent of New York by the Boston Transcript, will certainly be news to Christian Scientists. The members of the Christian Science Church in Boston, the Mother Church, officially known as The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, Mass., as well as the members of its branches will read this item with surprise. There has been no split in this church, nor any new body formed of any kind or character whatsoever from the membership of this church or its branches.
We wish to say to our newspaper friends, that so far from there being any split among Christian Scientists, there never was greater unity or activity within the ranks than at the present time. New church edifices are being constructed in many places; new societies and churches are being almost daily organized; the church membership of the branches is rapidly increasing, and in ratio of the increase of membership in the branches is the increase in the Mother Church, whose members are now admitted semiannually. At the last semi-annual admission of members in November, 1899, there were nearly thirteen hundred new members received.
