Testimony of a Dentist
I became interested in Christian Science because the Christian Scientists with whom I came in contact in my profession and otherwise seemed to possess something better than any one else I had ever met. I have never seen a Christian Scientist unhappy or disturbed by any pain I was obliged to inflict, and I have seen many who seemed to dispel every evidence of pain under trying circumstances from a mortal mind standpoint.
About the time I began the search for this Truth I closed my safe door one afternoon, with the thumb of my right hand inside. I will not attempt to describe my feelings, but simply say that I went home at once. My thumb gave me all I could attend to and I had no thoughts of business and cared little for anything except to get rid of the pain. I retired with my right hand propped high with pillows, the only way I could get any relief, and very little even then. I went to my office the next morning with my arm in a sling to give my bookkeeper directions regarding putting off my patients. My first patient whom I could not notify arrived about the time I did. I told her not to take off her hat and wraps, and explained my condition. She being a Christian Scientist laughed at me, and told me I could work just the same as ever, and finally induced me to try, which I did, and succeeded.
I never had a moment's pain or soreness with that thumb from that day to this, and although I lost the nail and experienced the tenderness which usually follows, I never realized one particle of pain or inconvenience, and there is no scar or evidence of an accident in the thumb or new nail, and the thumb has done its good work in earning a living for myself and family every day since the accident occurred in April, 1898.
