Spirituality and sports

Live audio chat with Jan Keeler, C.S.B.

This lively chat covers a wide variety of topics ranging from issues of concern to athletes (both children and adults), to parents, and to those who are fans (or critics) of professional sports. In responding to those topics, Jan talks about the valuable spiritual lessons that she and her family learned through her daughter's involvement in sports. She says, "It's much more than the winning or personal achievement. A spiritual approach to sports enables us to learn the real basis of strength, agility, discipline, persistence, steadiness, poise, humility, and grace." She adds, "Whatever brings us closer to God is a good thing," and seeing the spiritual basis of those qualities is a good thing.

Jan responds to listeners who raise a variety of questions about rowing, exercise, team sports, rough sports such as football, how to remain humble. She also offers thoughts to a Sunday School class about sports, and to a parent who asks about dealing with children who are not good at sports. One young person asks about what to do when the rest of his team isn't playing as hard as he is. The chat also covers such issues as the huge salaries professional sports figures make, the problem of doping, and why athletes are treated like heroes.
