I was looking for a church

Originally published in Spanish

As a young girl, I sought a relationship with God and wanted to know and understand Him. I liked to read the Bible, and I had a few favorite things that I studied daily, such as the twenty-third Psalm, the ninety-first Psalm, and the Sermon on the Mount.

In my mid-twenties, I was looking for a church whose teachings I would feel comfortable with, and I visited many churches, especially evangelical ones. I particularly liked hearing the sermons that mentioned Jesus’ healings. When a friend told me about a local group of Christian Scientists, I started attending their weekly church services. I really enjoyed being part of the group and learning about Christian Science. (The group later became a branch Church of Christ, Scientist.)

Soon, the members kindly invited me to be an organist for their services. I was working as a piano teacher at the time, but I knew the organ, and I began playing for both the Sunday services and the Wednesday testimony meetings. I became familiar with most of the wonderful hymns in the Christian Science Hymnal, and these were a great comfort and blessing to me. Even when I wasn’t playing the organ, I would attend the services with my boyfriend, who later became my husband. I gained so much from hearing on Sundays the Bible Lesson-Sermons outlined in the Christian Science Quarterly and especially the testimonies of healing during the Wednesday meetings.
