Learning that I can expect healing
Recently, I learned how important it is to expect healing when faced with a problem.
Early one morning, I felt that something seemed to be blocking my throat. When I checked in the mirror, I found that the back of my throat was swollen. It wasn’t painful, but it was uncomfortable. It was difficult to breathe comfortably and swallow, and I started feeling worried.
I grew up attending Christian Science Sunday School, and in university, I really committed to putting Christian Science into practice in my life. I’ve had deep and lasting healings exclusively through my study and practice of Christian Science, so I knew I could rely on it for healing.
I immediately turned to God in prayer and had the idea to listen to the audio version of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy on JSH-Online.com, which I often turn to for comfort.
I lay down while listening to the chapter “Christian Science Practice,” and was able to rest easily. Each time I was tempted to worry, I would hear a simple and clear passage being read, and, reassured by the spiritual ideas in Mrs. Eddy’s writings, I knew I was safe.
One statement in particular stood out to me. It says, “If the Scientist reaches his patient through divine Love, the healing work will be accomplished at one visit, and the disease will vanish into its native nothingness like dew before the morning sunshine” (p. 365). This was encouraging—that prayer can be simple just by feeling and acknowledging God as divine Love and knowing that He loves and cares for me.
Later that morning, I contacted a Christian Science practitioner to pray with me. What she shared was meaningful and anchored my thoughts in what I know about God. I know from studying the Bible that God created us in His image and likeness and that everything He created is good (Genesis 1:26, 27, 31). If God is only good, then He doesn’t know swelling or discomfort. He knows His love for me and my perfection as His child and is constantly communicating that to me.
The practitioner’s compassion and the simplicity of these ideas reassured me that I could expect healing.
I felt good about going about my day, following God’s guidance and feeling secure in making the right choices at each step. This included meeting a friend at the park. I had told my friend about the issue, and he supported me in continuing with our plans. We had a lovely time, and, while walking home a couple of hours later, I realized that I’d been healed. I had been speaking and laughing normally, and had even enjoyed a cold drink, swallowing easily. I checked my phone when I got home and found that the practitioner had sent me the perfect message to support the healing that had taken place.
I am overjoyed at how quick and simple this healing was. I’ve learned that we can expect quick healing as we listen to God moment by moment.
