Pain disappears immediately
Several months ago, I helped friends move construction materials from a basement up to a debris box outside the building. Returning home afterward, I began to feel acute pain in my lower body. I remembered some spiritual truths I had learned in my study of Christian Science—that God is divine Spirit and that His creation (including me) is wholly spiritual, like Him. I immediately rejected physical sensation as a contradiction of these facts, an outright lie that needed to be corrected through prayer.
This statement from a Sentinel article I had just read titled “A healing project: Understanding God’s all-power” (Mark Swinney, February 2, 2026) stood out to me: “In prayer, as I contemplate God’s power to right wrongs, heal sickness, and eliminate lack, it becomes clearer and clearer to me that God shares power with nothing and no one.” I recognized that, as God’s image and likeness, I reflect God’s power.
I also prayed with one of my favorite hymns, No. 10 from the Christian Science Hymnal. The first line reads, “All power is given unto our Lord, / On Him we place reliance” (Frederic W. Root, based on a hymn by Martin Luther). I knew that I must acknowledge and insist on this, and I resolved to rely on divine Mind’s guidance about my true spiritual selfhood rather than on any thoughts coming from a false, material sense of myself.
