Spiritually anchored
We all have things that we love and feel attached to—a person we love spending time with, a place that always feels like home to us, a particular item that carries treasured memories. But when something suddenly changes, we might realize just how attached we’ve become. Loved ones move away—or we do; relationships shift; a meaningful object is lost or destroyed. We may find ourselves on our mental knees in prayer, seeking a more spiritual, permanent sense of present good.
Christ Jesus gave us a clear example of how to find that sense of good. He moved from place to place as his mission led him, and it’s impossible to imagine him saying, “I really don’t feel like leaving this place to go help elsewhere; I’m quite attached to it.” Jesus was always ready to follow the leadings of God because he understood the source of all goodness and power to be divine.
It was natural for Jesus to find this security in God’s care wherever he went. He recognized that, in reality, man dwells not in a changeable, material state, buffeted about by ever-altering circumstances outside of our control, but in the settled, dependable realm of God, Soul—where individuality and identity as God’s true expression are dependent solely on God. Jesus referred to the kingdom of heaven as being at hand. The Christian Science textbook defines heaven in part as “spirituality; bliss; the atmosphere of Soul” (Mary Baker Eddy, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 587).
