Healing of hearing condition
In one of my ears there was a loss of hearing and a ringing sound. Whenever I talked with someone on the phone, unless I was using my headset, I preferred to hold the phone to the other ear. As a Christian Scientist, it was natural for me to turn to God for help through prayer and metaphysical study. So I called a Christian Science practitioner for treatment through prayer. She gave me treatment daily, and this went on for about four months.
I did a lot of deep study of Christian Science using Concord, a software program enabling me to study the Holy Bible, Mary Baker Eddy’s writings, and the Christian Science Hymnal by doing word searches. In Science and Health, Mrs. Eddy defines ears as “not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding” (p. 585). I prayed to see that we do not really hear with an eardrum but with spiritual understanding. This meant that I had to strive for growth in my spiritual understanding of God. Through deep prayer and study, I worked to get a better understanding of God as infinite Life, Truth, Love, Soul, Spirit, Mind, Principle, which are the synonyms of God described in Science and Health (see p. 465).
This was a wonderful spiritual growing time for me. As I studied, it became clearer to me that listening to and understanding God means being obedient to Him, as a child would be obedient to a loving parent. I realized that I could understand and live Christian Science only as I was being obedient to God through living my at-one-ment with God.
God sends us His angel messages. I loved listening to them. I strove, through quiet prayer and study, to be more receptive to messages of Truth. These angels lead and guide us into an ever fuller understanding of God, infinite Truth, Life, and Love. They give us right, helpful, and spiritually uplifting ideas. They guide us home to the kingdom of heaven—our present abode.
I loved to think about how we live in Soul, and Soul is infinite. Our faculties are faculties of Mind, Soul, and are immortal. Therefore, they are spiritual, perfect, and indestructible. And I studied passages from the Bible and Science and Health that talked about being governed by divine Principle and Love. I loved the thought that Love and Principle govern us in perfect harmony. I prayed and studied for a clearer understanding of spiritual perfection. I knew that as immortal representatives of Soul (see Science and Health, p. 306), we are forever spiritual, perfect, and beloved by God.
I also found it helpful to pray to get a better grasp of the concept of now, because I am now, and always have been, God’s spiritual and perfect child, with perfect faculties.
One day I spent much time studying citations in Mrs. Eddy’s writings to gain a clearer understanding of life, substance, and intelligence as being spiritual rather than material. I felt a clear sense of freedom and dominion over limiting beliefs about my hearing, and I saw clearly that I reflect the perfect, all-knowing Mind.
As I continued to pray and study, I noticed that the hearing problem in my left ear was diminishing. My hearing in that ear was getting better. The next morning I realized that it was just as good as the hearing in my right ear. And the ringing sound that had been such a nuisance had stopped. I was healed. The hearing in that ear continues to be fine.
I am so grateful for this healing. I feel confident that God will continue to reveal just what I need to know and that I am listening to God and being obedient. I love doing God’s will.
