In all seasons

Some of us live in climates with a dramatic change of seasons—these extraordinary shifts from winter to spring, then summer to fall. It’s amazing to see how different the same landscape can look, as even the plants and animals change. Right now, the goldfinches outside my window at the thistle sock are losing their dusky olive winter color and day by day becoming a stunning yellow.

But for some, a seasonal change only stokes fears of reactions, allergies, and suffering . . . that somehow something this glorious can wreak such misery in our lives. It is the Christ that lifts us out of a perception of penalties and curses and back into the original sense of creation, where God blesses it all, and all of it is good.

This spiritual outlook is the basis of healing that Mary Baker Eddy explores in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. She describes the days and seasons of God’s creation where “. . . beauty, sublimity, purity, and holiness—yea, the divine nature—appear in man and the universe never to disappear” (p. 509). Let this higher view restore a natural, ongoing joy in each of us, season by season by season.
