Oral surgery avoided

A little over a year ago, my son began wearing braces to correct a tooth that was diagnosed as impacted, by one dentist and two orthodontists. When the orthodontist who put on the braces checked my son’s tooth four months later, he found that the tooth had moved to a different position and was blocked by two other teeth in front of it. He informed us that the only way to bring this tooth to the proper alignment was through oral surgery, which he wanted me to schedule immediately.

My first response to this situation was a firm rejection of the inevitability of surgical intervention as the only way to correct this problem. I had recently had class instruction in Christian Science and was certain that all things are possible to God, as Jesus promises us in the Bible (see Matt. 19:26). I called my Christian Science teacher for prayerful support, and she affirmed that I could trust God and my understanding of Science to bring healing in this situation.

Christian Science had taught me that nothing is beyond God’s harmonious control over all, and that we can rely on it. I understood that there was no other power besides God, and that nothing could deprive us of experiencing God’s loving and intelligent power in every aspect of our lives.
