Stand up to fear

We don’t have to live in fear of contagion!

That’s the joyful message of this week’s issue of the Sentinel, which explores how prayer not only dispels and dissolves the fear that so often accompanies news of a contagious disease going around, but can bring about healing of sickness, as well. Our cover stories in this issue include compelling examples of contagious diseases healed through Christian Science prayer. And they also powerfully illustrate the preventative aspect of employing scientific prayer, as well as the curative—the sweet assurance that we don’t have to fear or expect the inevitability of disease.

Of course, a spiritual approach to handling contagion doesn’t mean ignoring it as an issue; rather, it entails insistence and understanding that contagion has no spiritual legitimacy and no divine mandate to affect anyone. Sarah Hyatt puts it this way in our cover story: “We have divine permission to conquer contagion with Truth and Love, synonyms for God. Our prayers then move beyond the idea that we need to beg God to take the sickness away or stop it from going around, to an acknowledgment that God, Truth, Love, is indeed the only lawgiver and never created laws of contagion” (see p. 14).
