'Whole, not hole'

During a regular checkup, the dentist told me I had a cavity that needed to be filled. I scheduled an appointment for the filling, but I also prayed. One day, as I reached out to God for an answer, the angel thought came to me, “Whole, not hole.” This play on words was funny to me, and at first I wasn’t sure if it was a message from God, or my own play on words.

At the next Sunday service that I attended at a branch church of Christ, Scientist, I recounted this experience to a Christian Science practitioner, who replied, “God has a sense of humor, too, you know.” At that moment, with the practitioner’s explanation, I accepted the thought that had come to me earlier. I understood that I was whole because I was a complete spiritual idea already, not a material body that could be punctured, then filled, or refilled.

When I returned to the dentist to keep the appointment for the filling, he announced that the tooth he had diagnosed with a cavity no longer had a cavity. That was over 20 years ago, and I have not had to visit the dentist for anything other than regular cleaning since.
