‘Where two or three are gathered in my name . . .’

After my mother’s passing, I found in her apartment a small red box with letters that she had saved from her active correspondence with friends and family. One was from a former neighbor, who expressed her gratitude to my mother for bringing Christian Science into her life. At the time, this neighbor had been desperate. Her family was deep in debt, their business had been unprofitable for some time, and to top it off, her husband had fallen down the stairs and was severely injured.

My mother gave her a copy of Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy to read, and talked to her about God’s love for everyone. The neighbor started reading the book, and although she said at first she didn’t understand “even half of what I read,” it wasn’t long before things turned around. Her husband recovered, the business picked up, and soon they were out of the worst.

As a young girl I remember my mom walking across the street in our small town in Germany to talk to this lady and answer her many questions. I understood how much this letter had meant to my mother. Sharing “the truth that makes free” was her heart’s desire. I now see how what she was doing was living Church.
