THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

SHINING THROUGH

My home on the eastern outskirts of Johannesburg includes a wooded area with two small dams that drain into the Little Jukskei River. The wildlife they attract include cormorants, sacred ibis, kingfishers, and tiny colorful red bishops, all of which are a constant source of pleasure.

In winter, a mist often creeps up the valley overnight and persists into the frosty morning, until the sun burns it away to reveal the beautiful, cloudless, diamond-sharp, blue sky characteristic of Highveld winter's days.

I took this picture early on a freezing morning as the sun was just breaking through the mist. The birds were not yet active. The first rays were reflected on the quiet water of the dam. The frost was still on the ground, but thawed drops of water fell from the trees.
