The Story of Nehemiah
Two students from Hoylake Sunday School in Wirral, England, loved what they learned about the story of Nehemiah in the Bible. So they turned it into a game to share with their friends who may not know the story And here they're sharing the story with you, along with what they've learned from it. After you read it, try playing their game!
NEHEMIAH was from a Jewish family with roots in Jerusalem. The country of Judah and the city of Jerusalem had been invaded and ruled by the Babylonians. But then the Persians came and conquered the country. And they took many Jews away to work in Persia. That's how Nehemiah found himself as a servant to King Artaxerxes in the palace of Shushan.
One day King Artaxerxes noticed that Nehemiah was sad and he asked him why. Nehemiah told him that he was unhappy because Jerusalem had been destroyed by so much fighting. He said that he would really like to go and build it up again. Ever since Solomon had built the finest temple in Jerusalem, to house the tables of stone on which the Ten Commandments were written, the Jews felt that Jerusalem was a special place, and that keeping Jerusalem beautiful was their duty to God. Nehemiah explained all this to the king. And the king agreed that Nehemiah could go to rebuild the city.
