SHE FELT GOD WITH HER

As a political officer in the United States Embassy in Baghdad, it fell among my duties to understand and communicate to my superiors the details and progress of an ongoing negotiation process. And as a primary contact, with an incredibly hectic schedule, I began to feel a personal responsibility for the progress.

One day, with a particularly busy schedule ahead of me, I felt something snap in my lower back as I got out of the shower. I found myself on the floor in agony. I couldn't move. The only thing I could think was, "Please, God, help me, help me, help me." Then I heard what I felt was God speaking directly to me: "I made you free." I managed to get to my bed and just lay there.

I called a Christian Science practitioner in the US to pray with me, waking her at 3:00 a.m. her time. Her words greatly comforted me. We discussed how this pain was not from God, but was an aggressive suggestion that His movement and progress could be stopped. She urged me to remember that as Christian Science teaches, God did not create pain or mortality; therefore, it does not have an element of truth in it. ". . . progress is the law of God . . .," wrote Mary Baker Eddy (Science and Health, p. 233). I'm learning in Christian Science that I am a spiritual idea of God, that God's laws apply to my thinking, to my body, and therefore to my ability to move. It was also true for my work. There could only be progress.
