I enjoyed the article "Practicing Earthcare" by Dorrit Christiansen on the extra spiritual steps we can take in the protection and support of the environment ["How your thinking affects the environment," March 14].

As a Peace Corps volunteer in a small village in Africa without electricity, I see day-to-day examples of deforestation and overfishing of the lake. Recently I worked with my school's wildlife club to plant about 600 trees. There seemed to be little interest from the community.

The true Creator's activity was demonstrated later when the community started a project to plant trees (thousands of them). Most of the work was done by women who received $0.35/day. The project was started late, well past the suggested rain period. I was concerned that all of that effort was wasted, but there was heavy rain outside of season and the trees are doing well. Proof that all of God's ideas live, move, and have being in His presence.
