Time to jump again

It was shaping up to be a typical winter's sports day. The sun was shining brightly, but there was a cold wind. Competitors from different schools lined up, anxious, yet excited. By midmorning I'd done very well in my events, and I was pretty pleased with my performance.

My next event was the long jump. I lined up for my first jump. I took off, but I didn't manage the run-up correctly. My ankle collapsed under me as I fell into the pit. It was hard for me to keep the tears back. But I realized that if I was going to be able to jump again, I needed to quiet my thoughts.

I limped back to my position in the huge line. Then I sat down quietly and tried to shut out all the noise. The teachers were very concerned about me. There were kind offers of medical help. But I knew I just wanted to pray. Then I lay on the ground and put my jumper [sweater] over my head so I could focus on God and my prayer.
