Your INSIGHTS
Surveying the condition of his nation at the time of the American Civil War, Abraham Lincoln said, "We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country." I've often thought of that. If any country is threatened by terrorism, corruption, racism, or any other evil, in order to save itself, its inhabitants must first disenthrall themselves.
To disenthrall is to break out of the hypnotic state of fear that holds one captive to evil—as if evil were equal to good and more powerful. It's not. The facts are that God is supreme, and His goodness rules the earth. We need to acknowledge His presence more in our lives and bring our thinking under God's healing influence.
My resolution for the new year is to make a greater effort to disenthrall myself from subjection to matter. I know this will involve a lot. After all, it begins with the individual, doesn't it?—with me, not just others I'm going to take the Ten Commandments and Jesus' Sermon on the Mount and live them more in my relations with others, and love all of humanity with deeper, Christlier affection.
