THE CNN reporter popped out of nowhere as I threaded my way across New York's Penn Station, mobbed with Thanksgiving travelers.

"Why are you traveling by train?" he asked. "Why aren't you flying?"

"Because my family doesn't want me to fly yet," I explained.
