Soldier finds protection and healing through prayer

During the last year of World War II, I was part of the crew of a United States Navy transport ship. Our first voyage brought us to India, and upon returning after a few days' leave, I learned that Tokyo Rose had broadcast that our ship, identified by name and number along with very accurate details of our next mission, was not going to make it.

As many know, Tokyo Rose was the name given to any number of female Japanese disc jockeys who broadcast popular American music but whose real purpose was to undermine the morale of American military personnel.

I immediately began to pray that God is good and All, and that no prediction of disaster had power to fulfill itself, because it did not come from God. I don't remember exactly the way I prayed, but my prayer probably included the twenty-third and ninety-first Psalms. Since I have always been fond of Mary Baker Eddy's poetry, I was comforted by these lines from one of her poems, set to music as a hymn: "Strongest deliverer, friend of the friendless, / Life of all being divine" (Christian Science Hymnal, No. 298). Her statement, "Clad in the panoply of Love, human hatred cannot reach you" (Science and Health, p. 571) also came to mind.
