Not long ago, an article in Camping Magazine included an account of how one teenage girl in a training program to be a peer resource counselor at her high school in Santa Cruz, California, succeeded in saving a life.
One of her assignments was to talk to students she hadn't spoken with before, particularly those who seemed off by themselves.
At lunchtime, she spotted a "rather overweight, awkward-looking freshman boy sitting alone. ..." She went up to him and said, " 'Hello! Can I join you?' "
