Back and shoulder pain healed
Over the years, I have had many health problems that have been resolved by holding to the truth of God's continuous and infinite presence, and by the denial of any other power. One healing was of ongoing pain in my shoulders and back that I was afraid was something that would require an operation. I went to my second Christian Science lecture at this time. This lecture brought out the fact that God is the only Father and Mother, thus the only Parent. At that time I had two young children, was living in a country foreign to me, and was the sole child-raiser most of the time, as my husband traveled extensively and even spent weekends in his office. I had been feeling burdened by this responsibility, so the firm assurance of the lecturer that God is the only Parent, absolutely capable of caring for His own children, was most enlightening. The painful condition left me gradually within the next few hours, and has never returned.
Another instance of a physical healing occurred when I found myself one Saturday evening and Sunday morning with symptoms of influenza. I decided to call a local Christian Science practitioner, someone who is in the full-time healing ministry, who was herself just leaving to go to church. In our brief conversation, she denied very strongly the idea that ill health could be a contagious or infectious condition that could attack the man of God's creating—the spiritual man, which is the only man. I felt the symptoms fading as I put down the telephone. I hastened to get dressed and rushed to church, arriving a few minutes before the practitioner (I live closer). She was happy to see me there.
Sometime later, I found myself for several weeks with a strong hemorrhage related to what is termed menopause. This was hindering my daily work. I spoke to the same practitioner, who shared with me the well-known verse from the book of Revelation that speaks of "a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet" (12:1). This helped me see that I had dominion over the claims of a monthly cycle. And in Psalms I read, "When I consider thy heavens, ... the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained" (Ps. 8:3). I thought of these ideas for a little—at first with reluctance, I must admit, thinking "Well, I already know that." But then I prayed, as had been suggested. I was healed that same day, and other symptoms of menopause also disappeared. I could tell of many other healings we have had, including medically diagnosed jaundice and eye problems, but I will save those for another time!
