BOOM OR BUST, GOD PROVIDES PLENTY OF GOOD

Some years ago I left a position with a large company to start my own business. I was very fearful about the income from this new venture being inadequate to sustain my family of five. Several times each day, I asked God to help me see that substance and supply are spiritual, and therefore mental—independent of market demand for the service I was providing in the new business. I promised Him that I would sacrifice any and every human opinion that would interfere with my understanding of this truth. I studied the Bible and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy almost constantly. There were some very difficult days and nights, but gradually the belief that I was a little ego with the personal skill and intelligence to earn a living was replaced by a stronger conviction that I am God's spiritual man, "including all right ideas," as Mary Baker Eddy writes in Science and Health (see p. 475). During this time, my income grew to exceed any amount I had ever earned before and allowed me to be greater service to others.

Learning by degrees to prove God's law of abundance develops a wonderful, free feeling of divine control of our supply, planted in our thought, where we can never lose it, regardless of economic conditions. This is true abundance, in accord with James' statement "Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above [i.e., is spiritual, and therefore mental], and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness [economic cycles or market fluctuations], neither shadow of turning" (James 1:17).
