To Our Readers

THE ANCIENT PROPHET Isaiah promised his people that a "Messiah" would someday come to rescue them from oppression and political chaos. These were his words: "The government shall be upon his shoulder. And his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace" (Isaiah 9:6).

In the year of a photo-finish US presidential election, it becomes all the more striking that Christmas has so much to do with government.

When Jesus did come, he was indeed "mighty." But not in the way most people expected him to be. They expected a military conqueror. But he was the Prince of Peace. He ruled with kindness and spirituality. And by humbling himself before God.
