you can listen to God: the stories of Samuel, Ricky, and Mary
A Long time ago, about 1,000 years before Jesus, there was a little boy named Samuel. Samuel lived with Eli, a man who loved God. Eli was wise and was in charge of the temple where people prayed to God. Eli was very kind to Samuel and taught him about God. Samuel did chores around the temple to help Eli.
One night after Samuel and Eli had both gone to bed, God called Samuel's name. Samuel thought Eli was calling him, so he ran into Eli's room and said, "Here I am; for you called me."* Eli said that he hadn't called him and told him to go back to sleep.
Samuel went back to bed, but God called him a second time. Again Samuel ran into Eli's room and said, "Here I am; for you did call me." Again Eli said that he hadn't called him and told him to go back to bed.
