INTERVIEW

Beauty in a concentration camp

During an interview with The Herald of Christian Science (French Edition), Charles Herscovici, who is from Paris, France, told of a wartime experience in which he gained significant help from his knowledge of Science and Health.

In 1942, I was arrested by the Germans while I was trying to join the Allied Forces in North Africa. I was sent to a labor camp along with common criminals. All of us had to work hard, but I did not especially suffer from it because I had been assigned to the warehouse. I was mostly suffering from the conditions in general. The lack of food, the deep cold, the heat, the long periods of waiting while standing outside for roll call. These difficulties made me pray a lot.

I did not have any books with me, but I remembered "the scientific statement of being" that is found on page 468 of Science and Health and which speaks of our spiritual nature. It starts with these words: "There is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all." I also remembered some passages from the Bible and from Science and Health that I had learned by heart. The inspiration I had found in these books helped me to pray.
