Prepare for takeoff

How one flight attendant readies herself spiritually for travel

Children and even adults get a thrill out of going on the wild, bumpy rides at a fair or a carnival, but for some individuals, that spirit of adventure doesn't carry over when they have an occasion to travel by air.

For many years I have worked as an airline employee aboard airplanes, traveling many thousands of miles. On numerous occasions I was able to turn to God in prayer and to feel a sense of peace. I also witnessed resolutions to troubling situations we faced. One of the things I've found helpful is to bring a spiritual approach to each flight.

Mary Baker Eddy says in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, "Metaphysics resolves things into thoughts, and exchanges the objects of sense for the ideas of Soul" (p. 269). I find it helpful to think about each aspect of flying as representing different spiritual concepts.
