Don't be afraid. Be friends

Seth and his younger brother Silas live on a farm with two cows, three calves, four pigs, two horses, twenty chickens, and two cats. They love to help feed the animals and lead the calves to pasture. Their mom and dad grow hay in the summer for the cows and horses to eat in the long snowy winter. Also, their neighbor, Carl, brings wagonloads of hay bales to store in their big barn.

Usually Seth and Silas and their mother help Carl make the hay. It is lots of fun, with Carl's tractor and the big wagons. Sometimes Seth and Silas ride way up on top of the load of bales on the way from the field to the barn.

But last summer they didn't help Carl. In fact, Seth had become afraid of him. Carl had teased him about sucking his thumb. Seth didn't want to stop sucking his thumb, and he didn't want to see Carl again.
