Dental work proceeds painlessly

A few years ago, I learned while having my teeth cleaned that I had lost a filling in one of my molars. When I arrived for the appointment to replace it, the dentist offered a local anesthetic. When I declined, he indicated that he had quite a lot of drilling to do and that it could be painful. I explained that I had to speak at two meetings that afternoon, including one right after my appointment with the dentist, and needed to have my mouth and lips working without the effects of the anesthetic.

The dentist proceeded with his work and I proceeded with my prayer. I silently affirmed that God is good and God is All and that, consequently, nothing unlike God could be real. Therefore there is no pain. I then turned my thoughts to my afternoon assignment, which included speaking at a memorial for a law partner who had been a mentor in my career and my friend. I thought of the love that this man had expressed toward those working with him. I thought of the times he would bring his antique car by to give our children a ride in the rumble seat. In short, I filled my thoughts with good.
