Out of loneliness
Alone? Or with God?
Loneliness Sometimes forces spiritual growth in just the right way to teach us that being alone does not necessarily mean being lonely. Being alone with oneself and with God can be fulfilling and rewarding. As we become better acquainted with our Father-Mother God and understand our one-to-one correspondence with divine Love, we have what we need in order to turn from absorption with self. Our experience opens up in new and exciting ways.
After being used to a busy family life, I'm now alone for the first time. Although this is sometimes challenging, I can say honestly that I do not ever feel lonely. I am so grateful for the expending understanding of divine Love that I have gained through the study of Science and Health, This wonderful book has shown me my relationship with infinite Love, God. I know that His blessings are abundant. Feeling sorry for myself is not an option.
Mary Baker Eddy, the author of Science and Health, herself made the transition from abject loneliness to an understanding of her unbroken relation to God. About a year after the healing that led to her discovery of Christian Science, she found herself estranged from her family and uncertain of her friends. In a poem dated August 13, 1867, she recorded her troubled emotions, but not without an indication of mounting hope:
