NO ONE ELSE CAN FILL YOUR NICHE
Some years ago, it became evident to me that it was time to leave the marketing communication company for which I was working. I didn't have a clear sense of my next step, but I knew that I could best serve the world by serving God first, and that if I would listen for His voice, I could be assured of serving as His instrument for good in the context of business. I saw this to be a law of attraction to whatever clients would be blessed by my services.
In her autobiography, Retrospection and Introspection, Mary Baker Eddy makes it clear that no one competes with anyone else in order to fulfill his or her purpose in life. She writes: "No person can take the individual place of the Virgin Mary. No personcan compass or fulfil the individual mission of Jesus of Nazareth. No person can take the place of the author of Science and Health, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science. Each individual must fill his own niche in time and eternity" (p. 70).
My field was highly competitive from the standpoint both of landing a good job and of winning top accounts. Further, I had carved out a fairly narrowly defined niche for myself that was highly prized and sought after because it was in an adventuresome area of the business. So when I left my employment without a clear sense of what my next steps should be, the picture that lay before me could have felt daunting, to say the least. But I had been learning that as God's plan is revealed, an unmistakable sense of peace accompanies it, impelling one to walk in that way. And I had felt that impulsion to resign from the position I was holding.
