WHEN A CHILD ASKS, "WHERE IS GOD?"

Once, when my son and I were watching a televised report of an earthquake that had hit San Francisco, he asked me, "So where's God in all this mess?"

It was a good question. I paused for a moment, listening to God for the right answer. Then I said, "Well, let's take a closer look at what's being presented. We're seeing examples of brotherhood, bravery, ingenuity, and generosity as everyone responds to what happened. These spiritual qualities are indicative of man's true nature as the child of God."

The city was eventually rebuilt through the additional qualities of diligence, astuteness, resilience, and so forth. Right there, in the middle of what seemed to be massive devastation, God, divine Spirit, was preserving in human consciousness the truth of the indestructible order of divine creation. It was then exhibited in the form of restoration. God, who is divine Love and Mind, inspired donations to this cause and provided the ideas needed for practical solutions. God also governed the resourceful efforts of those involved in renovations, and inspired all with hope and forbearance.
