Travel with God

Safety in a blizzard

How comforting it is to know that no matter where we find ourselves, God is always present, watching over and protecting all of us as His loved children.

One winter while attending graduate school, I left the campus late one afternoon to drive home. My drive usually took more than an hour and a half. After I had driven on the tollway for a while, I suddenly found myself in a raging blizzard. I decided to stay at a motel overnight, but as I watched for an exit sign, I realized that I couldn't see anything—anywhere. The snow was falling so thick and fast that I could barely follow the white line on the road. I couldn't pull off the road and stop because I might have ended up in a ditch.

I had no choice but to keep driving. I certainly did have a choice, however, as to what I could think about as I drove. Christian Science had taught me that I could never find myself in any place where God was not already present. I knew I could trust God, divine Mind, to guide me safely. I didn't need to panic, and I didn't.
