"The Healing of America"

Marianne Williamson speaks in Boston

IT SEEMED APPROPRIATE that on the morning that many Americans were catching their first glimpse of the Starr report on President Clinton's personal life, a well-established American writer and lecturer, Marianne Williamson, should be delivering a keynote speech on "The Healing of America" to a Body and Soul conference in Boston. These conferences, sponsored by New Age publishing and the omega Institute, were launched in Boston in 1994, and have now been expanded to five other cities.

Ms. Williamson, who included excerpts from her book titled The Healing of America [Simon&Schuster], began by observing that those who have been studying the principles of spirituality and personal growth know that all things begin within us. "This is not a new thought," she said. "It's really an ancient thought that goes back to the wisdom of the ages."

She said she was encouraged that there is a "critical mass" of people in the world today who not only understand this intellectually, but are ready to apply it in a meaningful way to their personal circumstances. The transformation of institutions comes as a result of a shift in which we show readiness as individuals—and also collectively—to adjust our own "internal lives" in such a way that breakthroughs become not just possible but inevitable.
