Glimpsing God's goodness removes unsightly growth

While I was in school, a growth appeared on my face. A concerned classmate who noticed the condition suggested that I see a doctor. At first her remarks frightened me, and I became upset. Then I thought, Haven't I been attending a Christian Science Sunday School where I have been taught how prayer heals? Couldn't I pray about this problem? In the past my mother and I had prayed about other physical disorders, and I had been healed. So I felt sure I could trust God to heal me this time, too.

I began to pray for myself.  I declared that because God, good, is omnipotent, good is the only power. The growth, not being good, did not come from God, and so it had no power to injure me. This Bible passage in Genesis daily inspired and encouraged me to hold to the spiritual truth it contains: "God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good" (1:31). This made it clear to me that I can experience only good. God, Spirit, is the only creator of man the universe; thus only God's goodness is real and true. A growth is the opposite of God's goodness and must therefore be untrue and unreal.

These truths calmed my fear. I felt peaceful and gained confidence. Even when other people commented, I kept praying. I held to the fact of God's all-power until one day I noticed the growth had gone. I was so pleased about this healing, because it was the first time that I prayed for myself and was healed.
