Harmony and healing in athletic endeavors

This past summer, I was an assistant counselor on a rigorous canoeing trip. As our group approached one of the class two or three rapids, my canoe was the last to go. Halfway down the rapid, two campers had flipped their canoe, and it was stuck on a rock in the middle of the river. We were able to maneuver our canoe into an eddy and give instructions to the campers. But because of the pressure of the rapidly flowing wa ter, the campers could barely move the canoe. Even after I got into the water with them, no matter what we tried, we could not get it loose.

Then I remembered that God was in control. This thought immediately comforted me. I thought of a passage from Science and Health that states, "Step by step will those who trust Him find that 'God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble'" (p. 444). At this point I was absolutely positive that God was in control, and I was eager to demonstrate His ever-present care.

Since the campers were also Christian Scientists, we stopped what we were doing and took a moment to pray silently. Then the thought came to me to try pushing the canoe in a certain way. Even though we had already attempted this maneuver several times, this time I was confident that divine Mind was guiding us. We got into position and pushed the canoe free. I quietly thanked God.
