The importance of watching

I have enjoyed receiving the Sentinel for fifteen years. Recently I asked myself, "What makes this weekly so important?"

A clue came to me as I was reading The Message: The New Testament in Contemporary Language, by Eugene H. Peterson: "And watch out! They're going to drag you into court.... You're placed there as sentinels to truth. The Message has to be preached all across the world" (Mark 13:9,10). Mrs. Eddy referred to Jesus as "this faithful sentinel of God" (Science and Health, p. 49). I saw I must strive to be a modern-day security guard.

What things of value should I guard? First, I must protect my individuality—the reflection of the qualities of God, good, that I display every day to my family and community. Second, I must preserve the special understanding of God that I have learned in Christian Science.

What destructive things should I guard against? First, I must defend myself from the pressures of the mortal, material world. Second, as Mrs. Eddy taught, I must arm myself against animal magnetism and mental malpractice.

This weekly publication is a sentinel to truth. It is my duty to follow Jesus' directive on the front cover of each Sentinel: "What I say unto you I say unto all, Watch."

The best gift

For Christmas last year, I gave a three-month subscription to our neighbor. Soon after this, the husband had a stroke and was in the hospital for over a month. This neighbor said to me that the weekly Sentinel was a lifesaver for her many times during this ordeal with her husband. The articles she read were inspiring and a great help in uplifting her in the challenging days of recovery.
