Serious illness overcome through prayer

I had a remarkable physical healing a few years ago that proved to me that God's healing presence is with us today and is just as powerful as it was nineteen centuries ago. For several weeks, while showering I had noticed a swelling in my nodes that grew worse and required bandaging several times a day. I was about to begin a consulting job far from home that was to last several months, and I was uncertain whether I should cancel an upcoming trip. I determined that I could go on the trip, having faith in God's ever-presence and care wherever I am.

My study of Christian Science had shown me that my real selfhood is perfectly healthy now—not just at some future time. As I prayed to understand this more fully, I recalled a passage in Science and Health. It points out, "Certain erroneous postulates should be here considered in order that the spiritual facts may be better apprehended." The fifth of these postulates is "... that matter holds in itself the issues of life and death,—that matter is not only capable of experiencing pleasure and pain, but also capable of imparting these sensations" (pp. 91–92). The spiritual fact is that my body cannot dictate issues of life and death or impart pain. God is Life, and my life is "hid with Christ in God" (Col. 3:3).
