No monsters

Andrew came into his parents' bedroom one night after he had already been tucked into bed and said that he was afraid of the monsters in his bedroom. Mommy told him that he should shut monsters out of his thoughts and instead think about the loving presence of God right there with him. She reminded him of the happy time he had had that day with friends at the park and the zoo, and said he should think about these good things and be grateful to God. Andrew went back to his room and turned on his light and was talking to himself.

After giving him several minutes alone, Mommy went in to check on him. As she went down the hall, she could hear him saying: "There are no monsters. God is Love, and His love is right here around me."

Andrew was sitting on his bunk bed with Science and Health and a globe. He had gotten out Science and Health because he knew it told him about the all-powerful presence and goodness of God; it also told him about the nothingness of error, or evil. Even though he couldn't yet read all of the words in this book, Mommy had read to him from it many times, and he knew the comforting truth was in it.
