Spiritual medicine prescribed for healing

When I was a child, my dad's best friend, a doctor, frequently uttered the sentiments attributed to Voltaire that medicine simply entertained the patient while nature healed the disease. Consequently, we were not given many drugs. But apparently nature didn't always do the job, for when the symptoms of appendicitis appeared, surgery was resorted to.

Years later, when introduced to the book Science and Health, I learned of healing that didn't rely on drugs, surgery, natural remedies, or even on nature's taking a healing course. I learned that trusting and understanding God, Spirit, brought a much higher healing power into one's life. It became obvious that while material systems eventually meet up with insurmountable obstacles, a wholly spiritual system offers unlimited possibilities for healing.

Mary Baker Eddy, the author of Science and Health, experienced healing as a child when her mother told her to turn to God in prayer. When a young woman, she herself healed a blind child. She thought about these healings for many years, feeling that they were not simply supernatural phenomena. She loved her Bible and studied deeply the healings contained therein, especially those accomplished by Christ Jesus. She saw that the Christly power he exercised overcame all obstacles.
