Amazing grace—how sweet the sound—
That saved a wretch like me!
I once was lost but now am found,
Was blind but now I see.
These are the opening words of "Amazing Grace," a well-known hymn written by John Newton over two hundred years ago. John Newton plumbed the depths of evil in his work as a cruel seaman and slave trader. If there were ever someone who deserved to experience the wrath of God, to be abandoned to his fate during a storm at sea, Newton was a prime candidate. Yet, exactly the opposite happened.
